A telegram from Carterton states that Mr J. Cardno, traveller for the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills, was picked up on the roadside between Clareville and Carterton by. the police on Thursday night. Mr Cardno was driving a high powered car, and it is thought that he sustained a stroke. He was found lying on the ground alongside the car and was taken to the police station at Carterton, where he received medical attention and yesterday was sent to Masterton for treatment. Mr W. H. Fallow, who leaves for Te Kuiti by the express this morning, was farewelled by the staff of J. E. Watson and Co., Ltd., yesterday afternoon. Mr J. Gilkison, manager, presided, and, in presenting their guest with a wallet of notes, referred to his excellent services as auctioneer to the firm. Though his going was a distinct loss to the firm, the speaker joined with the staff in wishing him all good fortune in his new venture. Nash and H. S. Condery (Wellington l , the Rev. W. Bullock Masterton i and Mr A. E. H. Harrison (Christchurch). Mr T. Pound, who has occupied the position of Chairman of the Southland section of the New Zealand Public Service Association for the past five years, was made the recipient of a presentation at the annual meeting held in the Floral Tea Rooms last evening on relinquishing that position. Mr T. McCarroll,'’Vice-President of the local section made the presentation, ami in a few appropriate remarks he expressed the appreciation of all concerned for the valuable services which Mr Pound had rendered during his term of office, and mentioned that one and all regretted his decision to retire. Mr Pound returned thanks for the kindly references made to himself and remarked that his duties had been made all the more pleasurable by the loyal co-operation and assistance given to him by all members of the Committee as well as by the individual officers of the various Departments.
