MATAURA BOROUGH

INSTALLATION OF MAYOR, • (From our Correspondent.) The installation of the Mayor and Councillors of the Borough of Mataura took place on Wednesday in the Council Cham bers. The retiring Mayor (Mr C. D. McConnell) and the Tcwn Clerk witnessed the declarations by the individual Councillors. The Town Clerk asked the Mayor to stand down and he asked for a motion that the Mayor be installed. Councillors Ingram and Aitken moved that his Worship the Mayor be duly installed, and Councillor Thorn witnessed his declaration. The motion being carried, the Town Clerk vacated the chair and the Mayor took office. The Mayor (Mr C. D. McConnell) then took the chair and briefly addressed the Council, congratulating the old members on being returned and welcoming the new members to the table. He hoped the Council would do as well as it had done in the past, and try to have no particular street in view, but to work in the interests of the whole bore ugh. On the motion of Councillors Robertson and Clark it was resolved that the Council meet on the third Tuesday in each month, the meetings to commence at 7.30 in the winter months and 8 p.m. in the. summer months. Councillors Aitken and Robertson, with the Mayor and Town Clerk, were appointed signing members. Councillor Mac Gibbon moved that a refund of the deposits be made and the election expenses be passed for payment. Councillor Mac Gibbon hoped that the meetings would go cn pleasantly and trusted they would bo enjoyable. Councillors Reid and Robertson also briefly returned thanks. In the course of a few remarks senior Councillor Thorn expressed pleasure at seeing the Mayor back into office. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Councillor Mac Gibbon, Councillor Thorn was appointed Deputy-Mayor. The following Committees were appointed:—Finance, Councillors Aitken, Clark and Robertson; Works, Councillors Thorn, Walker and Mac Gibbon; Sanitation, Councillora Mitchell, Reid and Ingram.
