VALEDICTORY

FUNCTION AT EASTERN BUSH. On Friday evening, 24th inst., the friends of Mr J. Lilico, of Eastern Bush, gathered at the school-house to tender him an evening on the occasion of his giving up schoolteaching. Music, cards and dancing were indulged in until supper time, after which Mr J. McLaren, on behalf of those present, presented Mr Lilico with a handsome wallet suitably inscribed. He said that although Mr Lilico was giving up what he termed a good “job,” he was glad that he was remaining in the district. He hoped Mr Lilico would remain to have further interest in the school as a committeeman. He understood that only married men were eligible for this position. (Applause). In conclusion he referred in glowing terms to Mr Lilico’s capabilities as a teacher, and referred to his willingness to help on the good work of the district. He wished Mr Lilico every success and happiness in future life. The company then sang “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Messrs McLean, Mouat, D. McLaren. Scott, Scobie and D’Arcy endorsed the Chairman’s remarks in turn. A very enjoyable evening was concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”
