POWERS THAT BE

AN OFFICIAL DECREE FIRE ENGINES AND NUMBER PLATES AN APPEAL TO THE MINISTER. Must the Invercargill fire engines have number plates? The Post Office officials say Yes! but their decree is not at all satisfactory to the Invercargill Board, which contends that the placing of plates on the easily recognised engines is a ridiculous and unnecessary expense.

The matter was discussed at a meeting of the Board last evening, when a letter was received from the Chief Postmaster. He advised that the Board was required to purchase number plates for the engines in common with other owners of motor vehicles.

The Secretary said that a plate had been obtained for the Superintendent’s car, but that he had written pointing out that it had never been the custom for the engines to carry plates. The name of the Board was plainly visible on each engine, and further there was no suitable place to affix the platfes. The letter received was the result of his communication.

“The matter should be carried further,” said Mr T. Chalmer. “It is absurd that the fire engines should have to carry number plates.” It was decided by the Board to refer the question to the Minister of Internal Affairs.
