THE RAILWAY SERVICE
LINKING UP BOTH ISLANDS. THROUGH RAIL BOOKINGS. A welcome advance has been made by the Railway Department in meeting the convenience of people who wish to make through railway journeys, or consign goods and parcels from one island to the other. After Easter it will be possible for people in either the North or South islands to book their journeys right through without having to trouble about steamer passages or berths. The whole of the travelling arrangements will be made by the Railway Department, which has just completed the details so far as the steamer passages are concerned with the Union Steam Ship Company. In about a month’s time, also, it will be possible to consign goods or parcels from any station in the Dominion to any other station, the trans-shipping arrangements to or from the South Island being made by the Railway Department. This will be of great convenience to the public, as at present, when consigning goods or parcels from one island to the other, the sea carriage has to be arranged by the merchants or the people concerned.
