Some Maoris have queer conceptions of the functions and duties of Government departments, as is evidenced by the fact that recently the Wanganui Post Officials received a letter from an up-river native demanding promt delivery of certain articles, some of which, by the way, they do not deal in. The old Maori enclosed a£l note, and requested that she be forwarded a packet of envelopes, a “small comb to clean the hair with,” and sundry other goods. She also intimated that after the cost of the articles and the “cartage” had been deducted from her note, she desired the balance of it is small monies.
