THE SUPPLY OF WATER.
One or two correspondents have suggested that the estimates of the quantity of water which the Dunsdale can deliver have been exaggerated, and there may exist a fear that the adequacy of the stream is not beyond doubt, but the evidence on this point seems to be conclusive. Messrs Clapcott and Symington gauged the stream roughly, and guaranteed a delivery of over 2,000,000 gallons a day, and Mr Fox, the present Town Engineer, using a weir for his calculations found in the driest season Southland has known for very many years, following on another dry season, that the Dunsdale could provide in the neighbourhood of 4,000,000 gallons a day. In addition, it is known that Mr James Stewart, whose labours in connection with the water supply, chiefly as an advocate of pumping, is satisfied that there is over 3,000,000 gallons a day available, while Mr J. M. Stewart, of Dunedin, whose association with water supplies in this part of the world is such that his opinion must be accepted as a weighty one, declares that there is ample water in the Dunsdale and ample underground at or near the Water Tower. In addition, Mr Clapcott’s original report confirms Mr Fox on the point that the head at the Dunsdale is sufficient to give adequate pressure in Invercargill, after allowing for all loss due to friction. On the question of supply then, the ratepayers have the following experts to assure them that the quantity of water in the Dunsdale is adequate: (1) Messrs Clapcott and Symington, engineers. (2) Mr Fox, the Town Engineer. (3) Mr James Stewart, of Invercargill. (4) Mr J. M. Stewart, of Dunedin. As the latest measurements were taken under the most adverse conditions known in connection with the Dunsdale, it would appear that there need be no anxiety about the quantity of water available in the Dunsdale, nor the fact that it can be delivered in Invercargill at a pressure equal to or better than that which the town now obtains in its present system.
