SHAKESPEAREAN SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Invercargill Shakespearean Society was held last night. The President (Mr J. S. McGrath) was in the chair, and there was a very fair attendance. The Chairman stated that owing to the removal of last year’s secretary, Mr T. G. Hirst, there was no annual report, although a statement had been prepared showing where they stood. The statement showed a credit balance on last year’s working of £4 8/9. The balance-sheet was then adopted. The* election of office-bearers resulted as follows: President, Rev. J. Lawson Robinson; Vice-Presidents, Dr Stanley Brown and Mr Gordon Brown; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr W. Shardlow (subject to his consent) ; Committee, Mrs Stanley Brown, Misses I. Cran and S. Aitken, and Mr Victor Haines. A vote of appreciation of the services of the retiring President was recorded on the motion of Mr Jones, who referred in eulogistic terms to the manner in which Mr McGrath had carried out the presidential duties. A reading from “King Henry VIII.” then took place, Mr McGrath giving an interesting and instructive resume of the play prior to commencing the reading.
