“POOR OLD ENGLAND!”

“ISN’T IN THE PICTURE.” (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) LONDON, March 4. (Received March 5,2 a.m.) Members of the House of Commons light their cigars with foreign matches, eat foreign meat and write their letters under foreign electric globes: These facts came out during a debate on the Estimates. Mr G. Locker-Lampson (Under-Secret ary to the Home Office) said the present contract for matches at Westminster expired on March 31, after which he would consider insisting that only British Empire goeds should be used throughout the departments. Mr G. D. Hardie, a Clydeside Socialist, complained that foreign meat, butter and sugar were supplied in the dining-room, while Mr V. Saklatvala, a Communist, derisively pointed out that electric light globes in the writing-room were marked “Made in Germany” and “Made in Bohemia.”
