THE MARCH OF SCIENCE
PHOTOGRAPHS BY TELEGRAPHY. DEVELOPMENT IN THE UNITED STATES. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) * WASHINGTON, March 2. (Received March 3, 10.40 pan.) Regular instantaneous trans-Contintental transmission of news photographs over telephone wires starts on April 1 according to officials of the American Telegraph and Telephone Company, who declare that the apparatus has been perfected and the photogarphic service is being placed on a commercial basis, especially designed for newspapers. Photographs five by seven inches in size can be transmitted in seven minutes. The cost will be 50 dollars from New York to Chicago, and 100 dollars from New York to San Francisco. The work of improving the transmission developed rapidly. The first tests produced crude results, but the latest pictures are only distinguishable from originals by means of a magnifying glass, though the same general method is used. The company claims that any further development depends upon the response from the newspapers and business houses.
