GERMAN PRESIDENCY
PROSPECTIVE CANDIDATES. MUCH SPECULATION OCCASIONED (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) BERLIN, March 3. (Received March 5, 1.0 a.m.) Though the various political parties will not yet discuss the question of the nomination of candidates for the Presidency, many names have been suggested, even that of the ex-Crown Prince though there is no foundation for such, while popular Nationalists like Hindenburg, Mackensen, Tirpitz and Prince Von Bulow are too aged to be likely to become candidates. It is generally assumed that Dr Marx has the best prospects if, as is probable, the Socialists, Centre Party and Democrats support his candidature. A purely Socialist candidate would have little chance of election; therefore, it is regarded as probable that the Socialists will not submit a candidate but will support the nominee of the other democratic parties. The election is expected to take place at the end of April or the beginning of May, after which, as an absolute majority is unlikely, a second election may be necessary’. The Communists are reported to be putting up Kalara Zatkin, their famous woman leader, as a candidate but this would hardly be taken seriously.
