TIMBER PRICES

NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIAN QUOTATIONS. AN EXPLANATION. DUNEDIN, January 27. The information which is being published in the New Zealand papers in regard to the prices charged in Sydney for New Zealand tongued and grooved dressed lining is no doubt correct. It is quite incorrect, however, to claim that these prices are very much lower than those obtaining in the country where the timber is produced. It has been stated that New Zealand tongued and grooved dressed rimu lining is quoted in Sydney at 9/- per 100 ft, and the larger size, namely, 6in x |in, is shown at 15/6 per 100 ft. The information is then given that the New Zealand quotation for both lines is between 30/and 36/- per 100 ft. A Dunedin timber merchant makes the explanation that the Sydney prices quoted are for 100 ft ‘lineal” measurement, the lining being of }in. In New Zealand, on the other hand, the lining is of Jin, and it is sold ex the Otago and Southland mills at 27/6 per 100 ft “superficial” measurement, with an additional charge for railage of 3/8 per 100 ft actual measurement. In other words, the price here is lower than that charged in Sydney.
