ISLAND DISAPPEARS
SCORES OF DEAD BODIES. CATASTROPHE IN PORTUGUESE WEST AFRICA. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) LISBON, January 27. The Government has received confirmation of the blotting out of the island town of Port Alexandra, in the south of Portuguese West Africa. The earlier wireless reports were regarded sceptically. Rescue ships now report that they picked up from a raging sea a number of sailors, who resembled gibbering madmen as they told the story of the catastrophe. According to them the bosom of the sea suddenly heaved mountain high, then dropped to a swirling maelstrom, under which the island disappeared. Only floating debris and scores of dead bodies indicate the scene of the disaster, which is attributed to a seismic disturbance. At present it is believed that not a single inhabitant has survived; but it is hoped that some may be washed up on the mainland, where dozens of small craft were stranded.
