“FOREIGN DEVILS”
BIG ANTI-CHRISTIAN MOVE. BOLSHEVIKS BUSY IN CHINA. (Sun Special). HONGKONG, January 17. Reports received here indicate that there is a growing anti-Christian movement in certain parts of China, notably in the province of Hunan, where the American missionary organisation is especially strong. Bolshevik influence is said to be at work. The movement originated in a students’ strike at the Yale-in-China College at Changsha, the capital of the province of Hu-nan. There have been noteworthy developments also at Canton, where the Bolshevik wing of the Nationalist party, under the leadership of a former civil Governor, is co-operating with a university students’ organisation. The British Consul is demanding the arrest and punishment of the persons who raided the Wesleyan Church and distributed anti-Christian literature, while shouting and terrifying the women worshippers. The movement evidently is part of the general Bolshevik propaganda, under which Christianity is described as an instrument of foreign Imperialism, designed to enslave the Chinese people.
