YESTERDAY’S PLAY. (Per United Press Association). WELLINGTON, January 23. Post sectional play in the Dominion rinks championship opened in brilliant weather to-day. The first round only was played. The semi-final and final of the championships pairs were played and also the North Island v South Island tourney. In the pairs semi-final, Rigby and Tonkin (North East Valley) defeated Dey and Ainger (New Brighton) by 18 to 14. In the early stages of the match, Tonkin consistently held the stronger hand and was 16 to his opponent’s 6 on the 14th head. Ainger and partner then appeared to -wake up and the leaders seemed to lose touch. Ainger continued aggressive and on the 20th head was only 3 points down: Tonkin 17, Ainger 14. He still persisted in a strong effort to win the game. It meant 3 points for a tie or 4 for a win. On four occasions when the lie was unfavourable to him he “burnt” the head. In the end, however, the New Brighton pair had to submit to the inevitable. Tonkin drew the shot with his third bowl and Ainger was unable to disturb the head. Tonkin thus won on the 21st head. The final between Davis and Sexton (Newtown), Sexton being a substitute for Wylie and Rigby and Tonkin (North East Valley) was a most interesting and hard fought contest. Sexton had all the best of the play and luck at the start scoring 4, 2 and 4 respectively on the Ist, 2nd and 4th heads as against Tonkin’s 1 on the third. On the fifth head the game stood: Sexton 12, Tonkin 2; on the seventh and on the eighth Sexton 15, Tonkin 5, but thence onwards Tonkin improved his position almost at every head and at the close of the 17th the score stood: Sexton 18, Tonkin 15. Sexton scored 2 on the next head and Tonkin 3 on the 19th but on the 20th Sexton also scored 3 making the game: Sexton 23, Tonkin 18. Sexton lay one on the 21st head but Tonkin drove and “burnt” the head. On the re-play Sexton scored 2 and the game thus ended: Sexton 25, Tonkin 18. A big bank of spectators gave hearty cheers for the winners and runnersup and the Dominion President afterwards presented the trophy. The North v South tourney was won by the South Island by the narrow margin of one point, the scores being: South Island 213, North Island 212.
