MAGISTRATE’S COURT

YESTERDAY’S BUSINESS. BY-LAW CASES DEALT WITH. A LENGTHY LIST. At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Mr G. Cruickshank, S.M., the following cases were dealt with: — BY-LAW CHARGES. Stuart Brown, who did not appear, was fined 5/-, costs 7/-, for allowing the registration mark on his motor cycle to become obscured. John Wilson also failed to appear and was fined £l, costs 7/-, for riding a cycle without lights in Ythan street. John Shanks was charged with negligent driving of his motor cycle on the North Road. Senior-Sergeant Scandrett stated that defendant was riding first with his feet up in the air and then with his hands waving about. "You can’t play these circus tricks,” said his Worship in imposing a fine of £3, with costs, 13/-. Henry E. Jackson was also charged with negligent driving of a motor cycle as a result of which he crashed into a motor car. He was fined £3, with costs 9/-. William A. McCaw and George M. Stewart were jointly charged with negligent driving arising out of a collision in Yarrow street. Defendants were each fined £2, with costs 7/-. For driving on the wrong side of Dee street, Thomas Ayson Robinson was fined 10/-, costs 7/-. James Carnegie Gardner (Mr A. B. Haggitt) was fined 10/-, with costs 7/- for failing to turn his car in Tay street as required by the by-laws. For a similar offence Herbert J. Munro was fined 10/-, with no costs. John R. Howie for incorrectly parking his car in the Crescent was convicted and discharged. James Price (Mr Horace Macalister) charged with parking his car in the Crescent, facing against the curb, was convicted and discharged. John Richard Ryder for riding a bicycle without lights, was fined £1 and 7/- costs. For riding on the footpath defendant was further fined 10/-. For driving a motor car in Elies Road without lights Edward Allan McPhail was fined £l, costs 7/-. John Bassett was charged with passing a''Stationary tramcar in his motorvan and was fined 10/- without costs. Charles Norton was fined £l, costs 7/-, for cycling without a light. Wiliam Joseph Hanning was convicted and discharged for cutting a comer in his motor car. For a similar offence Frederick C. Ridder was convicted and discharged. Leslie Gilchrist failed to appear and was fined £l, costs 7/-, for cycling on the footpath. For failing to stop behind a stationary tramcar Maisie McGregor was fined £l, costs 7/-. For speeding on the East Road Robert E. Robertson was fined £3, costs 7/-. For speeding in his char-a-banc Henry A. Holmes (Mr Gordon Reed) was fined £5, costs 7/-. Hugh Mclntosh was also charged with speeding on the East Road and was fined £4, costs 7/-. Stanley Broad, another motorist charged with speeding on the East Road was fined £4, costs 7/-. For speeding on the East Road Alfred Butt was fined £5, costs 7/-. William Poff for cutting a comer was convicted and discharged. Charles Morgan for cutting a corner in his cart was also convicted and discharged. William Pulley, who failed to appear, was fined £2, costs 7/-, for cutting a corner in his motor lorry. Milert P. Schmidt for turning in Dee street in an incorrect manner was fined 10/-, costs 7/-. Robert Timpany charged with keeping his car longer than 15 minutes in a place other than a motor park was fined 10/-, costs 7/-. WANDERING CATTLE. Archibald R. Fletcher charged with being the owner of three cows found wandering at large was fined 10/-, with no costs. For a similar offence in respect of two heifers, Frederick McFarlane was fined 5/-, with no costs. Arthur Ernest Sands, for tampering with the drainage system connected with his house, was fined £l, costs 7/-, SEPARATION. Separation and maintenance to the amount of £5 per month was granted Jean Howard against Rayner Howard. STORING DANGEROUS GOODS. For storing 280 cases of motor spirit in their store contrary to the Act, Carter, Desmoulins and Co., were fined £5, costs 7/-. THEFT AT OTAUTAU. George Summers Edgar (Mr Eustace Russell) pleaded guilty to the charge of theft of £6 9/6 the property of the A.M.P. Society between October and December. The police stated that accused, who was a collector for the Society at Otautau, had appropriated various sums of money received by him. For the accused Mr Russell said that Edgar was 63 years of age and had a previously good record. He would suggest a term of probation. Accused was released on six months’ probation, restitution to be made to the Society by accused.
