NO BIG RUSH
FOR MOTOR REGISTRATIONS. January 31 is the day fixed as the last date on which motorists may register their cars and obtain new licenses, under the new Motor Vehicles Act, without rendering themselves liable to a fine of £2O. It is calculated that there are between 7000 and 8000 motors in Southland, but an official stated to a reporter yesterday that so far only 300 had been registered at ’lnvercargill, though, of course, no doubt the sub-branches at Gore, Winton and other country centres had also handled some. ‘They have been coming in very slowly,” he remarked, “the only busy day being Tuesday, when about 60 were registered.” He went on to say that of the 300 already mentioned, 47 were new vehicles not previously registered under a local body, so the response had been very poor. “There is bound to<be a big rush towards the end of the month,” he said, “and it would be a big help to us if they would come to light a little more quickly.” A fee of £1 is levied for registration, which is permanent, while the annual license fee for drivers is £2. The sum of 2/- is charged for the temporary number plates, which will be replaced by the permanent ones when they come to hand from America in the course of a inoiith or two.
