GENERAL NOTES
The Corinthis is expected to sail on Saturday for Timaru to continue her Homeward loading. The Karetu is to leave Sydney to-djy for Lyttelton, Dunedin. Oamaru and Bluff. She then returns to Sydney. The Kahika is expected this morning from Greymouth with coal, and after discharge will sail for Dunedin in the afternoon. The Port Melbourne, from New York via Wellington, is now at Lyttelton and later comes to Bluff via Dunedin. She is due here on Tuesday next, to load frozen meat, dairy produce and general cargo for London. The Whangape left Newcastle on Monday with coal for Bluff and Oamaru. She is due here on Monday and will sail about Wednesday for Oamaru. The Calm is due at Bluff on Wednesday next with cargo from Lyttelton, and is to sail the same day for Dunedin and northern ports. Cargo for Bluff from the East will be discharged at Dunedin on Friday next by the Sussex, from Calcutta and Singapore, and should reach here about the end of the month by the Karetu. THE ORETI. The Oreti will leave Dunedin to-day for Invercargill with general cargo. She is due to-morrow and sails on Saturday for Port Craig, thence Dunedin again. NEW STEAMER FOR PICTON SERVICE. Yet another new .steamer, this time fur the run between Picton and Wellington, has been ordered by the Union Company. Negotiations, which have been in progress for some time, were made public on Friday, when the company announced that a contract had been made with Swan, Hunter and Company, of Newcastle-on-Tyne, for the work. The vessel, which will be an oil-burner, will be 260 feet in length, with a beam of 38 feet and a depth of 17 feet. She is expected to develop 17 knots. She will be equipped with electrical auxiliaries and winches driven by semi-Diesel engines. No effort is being spared to ensure comfortable accommodation for the passengers. There will be a special smoke-room, a lounge, a ladies’ saloon, and. on the lower deck a men’s saloon. Provision has also been made for the carriage of motor cars. Arrived: Maori, from Wellington; Waikouaiti. from Dunedin; Wootton, from Kaikoura; Kamo, from Westport. Sailed: Maori, for Wellington. DUNEDIN, January 21. Arrived: Wingatui, from Bluff; Port Melbourne, from Lyttelton. Sailed: Oreti, for Invercargill. PORT OF SYDNEY. IMPROVEMENTS EFFECTED SYDNEY, January ft, (ItaftiVftl Jatoary 7J5 pa.) Liat year the Sydney Harbour Truw, besides carrying out improvement* to wharfage and lighting facilities of the port, dredged the Western Channel and there are now separate incoming and outgoing channels 700 feet wide with a minimum depth of 40 feet at low tide. These facilities are considered ample for modern shipping.
