STATE FISHERIES

NEW APPOINTMENT MADE. NOTED ENGLISH EXPERT. (Special to the Times.) WELLINGTON, December 23. The appointment is announced of Mr A. E. Hefford, M.Sc. (Wales), to the position of fisheries expert to the New Zealand Government at a salary of £750 per annum. Mr Hefford, who was selected by the Public Service Commissioner from a large number of applications, received from New Zealand, Australia and Great Britain, is a noted English expert in fish culture and research. Since 1916 he has been naturalist. on the scientific staff of the Fisheries Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, engaged in North Sea investigations. and latterly in shore (shell-fish) and fresh water work. Since 1923 he has been in charge of the fresh water fisheries experimental station and Alresford (Hants). From 1905 to 1908 he was assistant naturalist to the Marine Biological Association for International Fisheries, and from 1908 to 1910 he was fisheries naturalist on the staff of the Plymouth laboratory of the Marine Biological Association. From 1916 to 1920 he was acting-district inspector for the north-east coast, and from 1920 to 1923 he was loaned to the Government of Bombay as marine biologist for a trawling survey.
