THE SHIPPING DISPUTE
OWNERS’ STATEMENT MAY LAY UP INTER-STATE FLEET THE POSITION IN AUSTRALIA (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) SYDNEY, December 23. A statement issued by the Australian Steamship. Owners’ Federation announces that the ship-owners are compelled to consider most seriously whether they shall not lay up the whole of their fleets until the Government enforces the laws of the country. The Federation vigorously attacks the Unions and the crews for holding up certain vessels. They criticise the judgment delivered by Mr Justice Powers in the Arbitration Court yesterday, declaring that the Court has proved unable to enforce its award against the Unions. THE CLAN MUNROE. DEADLOCK REPORTED. MELBOURNE, December 23. No settlement has been reached in regard to the dispute concerning the steamer Clan Munroe. The conference between the Prime Minister and the Union officials resulted in a deadlock. A Sydney message of December 20 stated: “The waterside workers at Fremantle have broken the Melbourne agreement by refusing to work the steamer Clan Munroe. In this action they are defying the Melbourne headquarters of the Union; but they are acting under the instructions of Mr Tom Walsh (President).”
