GORE. HIGH SCHOOL BOARD. (From our Correspondent). A meeting of the Gore High School Board of Governors was held on Friday afternoon, being attended by Messrs E. C. Smith (chairman), J. Blakie, C. Bennett, T. Taylor, G. B. Paterson, H. Smith, S. Rice and D. L. Poppelwell. The Chairman extended a cordial welcome to Mr Rice, who took his seat for the first time. Mr Rice suitably replied. The Town Clerk, Gore, advised that the Borough Council had voted £25 towards the expenses of the evening Technical Classes. In this connection the Rector reported that the sessions had terminated, and that the Government capitation earned was £lOB, and pupils’ fees totalled £44 10/-. The teachers’ salaries amounted to £123. — Received. The solicitors of the trustee of the Anderson bequest wrote, stating that £2BO of the bequest had been paid into the Post Office Savings Bank Account, and it was expected that the balance of the amount would be available shortly. The Chairman stated that the bequest would carry a Government subsidy of 10/- in the £. —It was resolved that the Works Committee consider the best purpose to w'hich the money could be applied, and make a recommendation to the next meeting. The Director of Education advised that the matter of accommodation for next year was under consideration, and prosposals were being made to the Southland Education Board. The Board would be advised further as soon as possible.—Received. The Director of Education communicated recent judgments regarding rating on unoccupied lands. It was held that education reserves are treated as Crown lands, but secondary schools’ lands were in a different category, and were not exempt from rates unless they were actually used for school purposes. —Received. The Rector reported that the school roll at date was 260, compared with 220 at the same date last year. Reference was made to the success of the boys in the shooting for the Imperial Challenge Shield, and to the success in the teachers’ D examinations.—Received. On the motion of the Chairman and Mr T. Taylor, it was resolved to congratulate the Rector, the staff and the pupils on the school’s fine record during the past year. The Chairman was authorised to procure a new’ flag for the school. It was resolved to hold the annual “break-up” ceremony on Thursday, December 11, and a sub-committee was set up to make the necessary arrangements. Several other minor matters were dealt with. FARMERS’ UNION. The monthly meeting of the Gore branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held on Saturday, Mr H. E. Bacon presiding over a good attendance. In connection with the County loan proposed for road construction, it was resolved that another meeting be called as soon as possible, in order that any available information be given by Councillor Bowmar. The Provincial Execeutive advised that with the object of stimulating interest in Union affairs it was proposed that each branch be visited by members of the Executive once a year, when addresses on Union matters could be delivered. The opinion of the Gore branch was solicited.— Received. The Executive also advised that it was proposed to forward free copies of the Farmers’ Weekly to 10 members of the branch, for a period, with the idea of ultimately gaining such members as subscribers. The names of 10 members were requested.—Received; referred to the Committee to deal with.
