LOCAL COMPETITIONS. SOME BRILLIANT BATTING. KAVANAGH SCORES A CENTURY. ! “HAT TRICK” BY WALSH. The second series of week-end fixtures were concluded at the Showgrounds, Invercargill, on Saturday afternoon in beautiful weather. The wickets were in excellent order and the outfield fast. A feature of the day was the batting, several fine scores being registered, while some good bowling averages were also attained. RESULTS AT A GLANCE. Union 283 v. Appleby 120 and 233. Marist 325 v. I.C.C. 184 and 106. BATTING.

UNION v. APPLEBY. This match resulted in a win for Union by 163 runs on the first innings. Appleby collapsed in their first innings against the accurate bowling of Shaw and Crozier, being ail out for 120. Following on, they made an excellent recovery, their second innings closing shortly before closing time for 233. Poole opened the innings in typical fashion, hitting a sparkling 40, in whch were included two sixers and seven fours. Groves following this with an excellent 64, but, with three down for 159, the wickets began to fall rapidly to the bowling of Gordon, the ex-High School captain. Edwards played splendid cricket for 27 not out, but otherwise the rest of the side were below form. It wanted but a few minutes of closing time when Appleby’s innings ceased, Union thus winning by a substantial margin on the first innings. UNION.

A great partnership between Kavanagh and Walsh added over 200 runs to the score before a separation was effected, Kavanagh compiling a century by brilliant cricket, with scoring shots all round the wicket. Walsh ably seconded his efforts, and although he was lucky at times, he nevertheless played a good steady innings. The rest of the side did not offer much resistance to Cook and Goodsir, although Graham put on a half-century by enterprising cricket. Invercargill “crashed” in their second innings, being all out for 106 against the steady bowling of Walsh and Graham. Walsh wound up a great day by taking six wickets for 34 runs, and performing the “hat trick.” INVERCARGILL. First innings 184
