JOURNALISTS’ AWARD
CHRISTCHURCH DISPUTE STRUCK OUT. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 6. In the Arbitration Court to-day, Mr C. Renn, for the employees, suggested an adjournment of the journalists’ dispute, pending the sitting of a Dominion Conciliation Council on November 18, as that sitting might clear up many points. Mr A. G. Henderson, for the employers, spoke in opposition to an adjournment, stating that the employers were not interested in a Dominion dispute, except compulsory, as they did not want a Dominion Award. The New Zealand Newspaper Proprietors’ Association would oppose a Dominion Award, as it would include not only the city papers, but also all sorts of country journals. Mr Justice Frazer suggested that the difficulty could be overcome by having two sections, one for the cities and the other for the country journals on the lines of the Wellington Country Award. He added that he did not think it would be wise for the local dispute, initiated by the employers, to be proceeded with, until a Conciliation Council should hear the Dominion dispute, and he expressed the opinion that it could not be dealt with before February next, in view of the fact that a Dominion dispute is to be heard at Wellington in connection with the freezing works and related trades on November 21. The local dispute was struck out.
