FIRE BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. Hie monthly meeting of the Invercargill Fire Board was held yesterday, there being* present: Messrs C. J. Broad (Chairman), R. N. Todd, W. 'A. Ott, R. P. Meek, and T. Chalmer. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs A. Bain and E. B. Pilcher. G. W. Dennis, manager of the Albion Theatre, wrote stating that the company he represented were desirous of placing before the local Fire Board the screening of a picture dealing with fire matters, entitled “The Midnight Alarm.” It had been used in different parts of the world in conjunction with fire prevention work. He asked if the local Board could arrange that the Superintendent co-operate with him in regard to arranging a local Fire Prevention week. It was intended to write to all the Fire Brigade members and ex-members inviting them to see this picture, and he also extended a hearty welcome to the members of the local Fire Board to be present.—The request contained in the letter was left in the hands of the Superintendent. The Minister of Internal Affairs stated that with regard to the item of approximately £2OOO for furnishings, etc, in the Invercargill Fire Board's proposed loan of £20,000, the purchasing of furnishings did not come within the scope of the Act, and for this reason the application to borrow £20,000 had been declined, but approval given for £lB,OOO. The Board having alected to retain the bank overdraft authority of £5OOO, he accordingly granted authority for the borrowing of £13,000 by debentures. He had no objection to converting the ibank overdraft of £5OOO to debentures if the Board found it more convenient to adopt that method of borrowing, but he regretted that approval might not be given to borrow a gum in excess of the Board's immediate requirements, for which reason their application to borrow £20,000 might not be approved.—Letter held over. On the motion of Mr Chalmer, it was decided that the matter of the closing of tenders for the new building be left in the hands of the Chairman and architect to act. On the recommendation of the Superintendent. Messrs Sargood, Son and Ewen’s tender for new uniforms was accepted. The General Committee reported having authorised payment of accounts amounting to £l7l 14/8, leaving a credit balance of £2415 15/11. The report was adopted.
