Mr S. Webb left for the north by the midday express yesterday. The Rev J. C. Chisholm left by this mornings express to attend the camp of the 12th Battery at Mataura as Camp Chaplain. Amongst the passengers who returned to Invercargill by yesterday afternoon’s express were Rev J. A. Lush and Mr Wm. Stevenson. Mr W. Norman, starter for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting to be held next week, left by this morning’s express for Christchurch. After having served the Southland Frozen Meat Company for close on 40 years, Mr John Hamilton, works manager at Mataura, has resigned his position. Mr and Mrs I. W. Raymond arrive in Auckland to-day by the R.M.S. Tainui from London. Mr Raymond who is an ex-South-lander has resided in London for the past 16 years where he was actively interested in politics, standing twice as a Conservative for the Carlisle constituency. The following Southland ministers will attend the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand to be held at Palmerston North next week:—Revs R. Francis (Bluff), E. Gardiner (South Invercargill), D. K. Fisher (Lumsden), J. H. Robertson (Queenstown), J. Fordyce (Riverton), A. McNeur (Winton), G. F. Cox (Woodlands), D. Heggie (Fortrose), J. L. Robinson (First Church, Invercargill), W. H. Norton (Centre Bush), M. A. Gow (Waianiwa), and J. H. Thomson (Kennington). There passed away at Jacob’s River, on Wednesday, a well-known and esteemed resident in the person of Mr William E. Prentice, aged 66 years. Deceased was a native of Forth, Scotland, and came out to the Dominion with his wife in 1884. On arrival he made his way south, and took up land at Jacob’s River, where he resided up to the time of his demise. Although of a retiring disposition the late Mr Prentice took an interest in church matters being connected with the Presbyterian Church for many years. He is survived by a widow, son and daughter. On Wednesday morning, after a long illness, there died at Bluff Mr Joseph Woods, a well-known resident of the port, at the age of 71. Born in Preston, Lancashire, the late Mr Woods travelled to many parte, and finally settled in Bluff some years ago, after periods of residence in Invercargill and Riverton. He was of a cheerful nature and will be missed by many who were fortunate enough to be counted among his friends and especially will his passing be felt among the members of the Bluff Anglican Church, in the affairs of which he took a lively interest, and in the bowling club, of which he was a prominent member until laid aside by sickness. He leaves a widow, two sons, and throe daughters.
