FIRE PEEVENTION
THE GORE BRIGADE. (From our Correspondent.) At the last meeting of the Gore Borough Council it was decided that the cost of installing fire alarm boxes in the town was too high, and it was therefore resolved not to go on with the proposal to provide these useful accessories to the work of the Fire Brigade. At first glance this might seem a retrograde step, but investigation of the circumstances indicates that the Council has not sacrificed efficiency to economy. The position is that eight telephones in the town have an all-night connection with the Fire Station, and fortunately the houses containing these telephones are well scattered over the town, being located as follows: One each in Crewe street, Devon street, Broughton street (south end), Coutte Road (west end), Redmond street, Halton street (East Gore), Wentworth street (East Gore), and at the Borough power station, in Gorton street. It will be apparent from the foregoing list that every quarter of the town is represented, and the decision of the Council was that notices should be erected outside all the residences concerned, advising the public that communication may be obtained with the Fire Station at all hours. These telephones will then be as well-known as call-boxes would be, and wiU serve the purpose equally as well, with practically no expenes. It is worthy of mention that three members of the Gore Fire Brigade reside at the station, while eight others are connected by all-night telephones. Each of the eight has either a car or a motor-cycle, and therefore, in the case of a night alarm, practically a doaen men could be at the station in a matter of a few minutes.
The people of Gore have therefore no reason to fear that the efficiency of the Brigade is in any way endangered or restricted.
