WAIHOPAI SCHOOL

A SUCCESSFUL BAZAAR. IN AID OF IMPROVEMENTS. Favoured with excellent weather and the absence of counter attractions the Waihopai School Bazaar in aid of improvements to the school play grounds held very successful after and evening sessions yesterday. The bazaar was held in the All Saints Hall Gladstone, and attracted a very large attendance both in the afternoon and evening—in fact it is unfortunate that a larger hall could not have been obtained as during the evening many were unable to obtain admittance. The bazaar was officially opened at 2 p.m. by the Chairman of the School committee Mr R. M. Strang who stressed the great need for an improved playing area. £3lO was required to asphalt the ground, and the Department were going to subsidise the amount raised, £1 for £l. Estimates had been obtained for asphalting in sections, and the work would be done to as great an extent as the money available would allow. The intention was to model the school front on the lines of the Public Hospital grounds, and he hoped that parents would fully appreciate the efforts that were being made. Business was then commenced and buying was brisk all afternoon and evening. The stall holders were as follows: Handkerchief stall —Mrs W. Mitchell. Produce stall—Mrs T. Bird, Mrs W. Kerse and Mrs Campbell. Cake stall—Mrs L. R. Lewis and Miss T. Stevenson. Flower stall —Miss L. Edgington, Miss M. Smith, Miss E. Wright and Miss M. O’Toole. Christmas trefi and Dolls stall—Mrs R. Colyer and Misses G. Cumming and L. and M. Stout. Plain and Art stall —Mrs Challis, Mrs W. Carswell, Mrs R. M. Strang, Miss Bird, Miss D. Foothead and Miss D. Strang.

Sweets, Ice creams and Drink stall —Mrs W. Clark, Mrs A.. Britton, Miss G. Dey and 6th Standard girls. Bran tub—Miss M. Stout. Afternoon Tea and Supper rooms—Miss F. McDonald, Mesdames K. Rattray and J. Jenkins and Misses Parsons and Walker During the evening an enjoyable programme was included amongst the many attractions. The performers were as follows:—Song: Std. II children, Skipping item Irene Mclntosh; Class song Std V; Skipping , Peggy Griffiths; Class Song Std III; Physical Drill display, Std V boys; Orchestral items by Mr Howie’s orchestra. COMPETITION RESULTS. ' The following are the results of the baking and other competitions held during the day:— Fruit cake—Mrs Scammell 1, Mrs Challis 2. Butter Sponge—Mrs Clark 1, Mrs Cheyne 2, Mrs Barham 3. Sponge sandwich—Mrs Peterson 1, Mrs Buchanan 2, Mrs Halpin 3. Chocolate cake—Miss G. Pearce 1, Mrs Moir 2, Miss A. Cheyne 3. Scones (plain)—Mrs Pearce T, Mrs Cheyne 2, and Mrs Halliday 3. (girdle) Mrs Halliday 1, Miss Bain 2, Mrs Pearce 3. Short bread—Mrs Thomson 1, Miss Dawson 2, Miss Russell 3. Pikelets—Mrs Gray 1, Mrs Pearce2. SCHOOL SECTION. Pikelets —May Clark ; Scones, Jessie Falconer; Afternoon tea cakes, May Clark. Best article made from a sugar bag, May Clark 1, Margaret Huffadine 2. Best article made from a petrol tin, Stanley Service 1, George Cathcart 2; article made from petrol case, Colin Crane 1, (special), Maurice Von Tunzelman 1. Best Home-made Doll—May Clark 1, Helen Dickison 2. Ladies nail driving—Mrs Lambert. Ladies’ sawing—Mrs P. Challis. The bazaar was concluded in the evening with an auction sale of the goods left over, which yielded good results and at the close of proceedings the total takings were found to have reached the very creditable sum of £l2O. Praise is due to the ladies' committee and the secretary;'. Mr W. Carswell for the excellent mariner in which the bazaar was carried out and all who assisted may be congratulated on the financial success of the endeavour.
