ROWING
(By
“Stroke.”
Owing to the very windy days experienced during the past week, coupled with i unsuitable tides, very little in the way of ’ training has been done at the local clubs, i Invercargill has not yet rowed off any of the President’s Fours races, but the fixtures are to be drawn to-morrow and doubtless the races, or at any rate, a few lof them, will be rowed next week, pro--1 vided, of course, that the weather clerk is : agreeable. j Railway have been in a similar position ! in regard to the President’s Fours races, | and the members have had to content themselves with working on the minor rei pairs to boats —a task in a rowing club that is never ending. AWARUA. Awarua will be commencing the Club Fours competition next week, and the crews i ;re to be picked on Sunday. The opening ; which was held on Saturday, October 25) instead of Labour Day as was previously suggested, proved a great success socially, but owing to the strong westerly wind blowing down the harbour, the water was 100 rough to allow of any long spins. Six crews, however, took the water and paddled I a short distance, but they were forced to I duck back to shelter before long. The social held in the evening was a jrreat success and the attendance, especially of friends and outsiders, was particularly large. After such a good opening and so much display of enthusiasm, big things should be expected from Awarua this year. Judging from published accounts of regattas in the H me Country, New Zealand gatherings are not conducted under such, exciting conditions as they might be. An extract from one of England’s sporting journals describes the London Fire Brigade races, held on the Thames, and is headed “Tense Race in a Terrific Storm.” It may be that oarsmen are of a much hardier breed in England than they are elsewhere, but it must be suspected that someone’s imagination has been running riot. It makes one shudder to think of what would happen to a racing four if it was out in a genuinely “terrific storm,” even on the river Thames. Invercargill members are at present selling tickets for a benefit performance to be given by the Civic Pictures early thip month in aid of club funds.
