FOUND DROWNED
WAIHOPAI RIVER FATALITY. The body of Mr Joseph Sharp an elderly man residing at Earnslaw Street, Northend, was found by a search party at 11 o’clock yesterday morning in a pool in the Waihopai River a few yards above the Ellis Road bridge. Much anxiety had been caused by Mr Sharp’s disappearance since last Tuesday morning and while a party of Police and relatives were dragging the Devil’s pool yesterday morning, the deceased’s two sons discovered the body further up the river. The watch in deceased’s pocket had stopped at 10.30 o’clock but it has not yet been ascertained how long life was extinct. An inquest will be held at a later date. The late Mr Sharp was a native of Somerset, England, and came out to New Zealand when a boy. He settled in Southland and for many years was a farmer at Oreti. Upon his retirement some seven years ago he resided in Invercargill. He was of a reserved disposition but was actively interested in racing and at one time was the owner of well known horses. He leaves a widow and family of 13 to mourn their loss.
