TAUPO FISHING RIGHTS
ADJUSTING NATIVES’ CLAIMS. POWER OF NEGOTIATION. (Our Parliamentary Reporter). WELLINGTON, October 30. Ftrwer for the Native Minister to enter into negotiation with Maori claimants in respect to fishing rights in Taupo waters is contained in the Native “Washing-Up” Bill introduced this afternoon. The term, “Taupo waters,” is defined as including Lake Taupo, all rivers and streams flowing into it, and the Waikato River between Lake Taupo and Huka Falls. The negotiations are to be held between the Minister or a deputy and all natives claiming to be the owners of lands bordering on Taupo waters. An agreement may be made with the consent of the Minister and of a majority of the natives claiming to be concerned. One of the terms may be that a special fee may be charged for fishing these waters. In the event of such an arrangement, a definite proportion of these fees is to be apportioned for the benefit of the natives, to be distributed among them, or applied for their benefit by methods to be agreed upon.
