MANY YEARS IN PRISON

GETTING EVEN WITH JUDGE. After spending 46 years in various prisons all over England, John William McCarthy died in Birmingham Gaol a few weeks ago, aged 79. He was undergoing a long sentence for burglary committed in Derbyshire. McCarthy’s robberies were chiefly from the rich and from mansions, offices, warehouses and hotels. He often buried his booty and returned for it when released from prison. Once McCarthy paid a nocturnal visit td a famous judge who had sentenced him, harnessed His Lorship’s horses to his coach, donned the coachman’s livery, and rode o’ff with the coach and pair. On the dark and lonely road he overtook a policeman, to whom he gave a ride, for which the officer of the law politely thanked him. McCarthy’s next sentence was for stealing the judge’s coach and pair.
