CHINAMAN FINED £3OO. ALLEGED RING AT WORK. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, September 23. In the case of Ah Pin, the Chinese carpenter on the steamer Sussex, in whose possession, in his cabin, were found 89 tins of opium, the sale value of which was set down at £2O per tin, it was stated during the hearing that there was in existence in Calcutta an opium syndicate, which forces on those in its servitude the smuggling of opium into New Zealand and other coun'tries. In Pin’s possession was a letter written by a Chinaman in New Zealand offering to take twenty tins. The Customs officers are of the opinion that there is a comprehensive ring in existence to import the drug into the Dominion. Counsel for accused said that Pin was a mere tool for an immense Chinese syndicate operating in Calcutta, but he refused to divulge its name. Pin was fined £3OO, or nine months’ imprisonment.
