PLEA FOR LIFE
BORN RICH AND CRUSHED BY LUXURY. THE CHICAGO HORRORS. (Sun Special). CHICAGO, August 26. A final plea for the lives of Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, the Chicago boy murderers, was made to-day by Mr Clarence Darrow, their counseL Leopold and Loeb, sons of millionaires, pleaded guilty to the murder of Robert Franks, a fellow student. The Court heard evidence to determine their degree of responsibility. Mr Darrow blamed disease of the youths’ minds for the crime. They were described as “luckless boys born rich and crushed by unrestrained wealth and foolish luxury.” Counsel asked for the Court’s mercy, saying that life imprisonment, rather than hanging, would be sufficient punishment. After hearing the final arguments of the State Prosecutor in favour of execution, Judge Caverley will consider the case for ten days before giving his verdict.
