GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT YESTERDAY’S MATCHES • (Our Special Reporter). AUCKLAND, September 10. Beautiful weather conditions prevailed for the continuation of the New Zealand golf tournament to-day. AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. The results of the matches in the third round of the Amateur Championship were: G. F. Gunson (Maungakeikei) defeated R. D. Wright (Auckland) 3 and 2 to play. L. Quin (Eltham) defeated J. Harold (Wanganui) 5 and 4. J. Goss (Wanganui) defeated J. L. Black (Hutt) 3 and 1. H. B. Lusk (Auckland) defeated A. E. Conway (Miramar) 5 and 4. Surprise was caused by the defeat of Wright, the Auckland provincial champion, by Gunson, who is only 19. There was not much between the players. In the morning, Gunson was one up and quickly increased it to 5 up at the turn in the afternoon. He played very steadily and Wright made too many mistakes to catch him, Gun. son winning 3 up and 2 to play. Goss scored comfortably over Black. His lead was 6 up at lunch and in the afternoon he maintained it until he unaccountably went off putting and lost 3 holes in succession. This left him 3 up at the 11th, but he won the 12th and was 4 up again Black took the next with a good putt, also the 15th and 16th, leaving Goss dormy 2. The 17th was the deciding hole, Goss winning 3 and 1. Harold was quite off form in his match with Quinn and he could do nothing right. He was 2 down in the morning and the game ended at the 14lh in the afternoon, Quinn winning 5 and 4 to play. Lusk, after being 1 down in the morning, played at the top of his form in the afternoon and soon squared the match and then ran to 3 up at the sth. Conway went off his game and Lusk increased his lead to 5 up at the 11th and won 5 up and 4 to play. The semi-final will be played on Friday. OTHER MATCHES. A bogey handicap match, played to-day, resulted in a tie between E. L. Bartleet and R. O. Gardner, 2 up. The medal handicap for professionals was won by R. C. Butters with a score of 149. COMMENT ON THE MATCHES. BLACK AND GOSS FIGHT HARD. OTHER INTERESTING GAMES. (Special to the Times.) AUCKLAND, September 10. Another determined effort to pull the game out of the fire at the last moment was made by Black, of Hutt, in the match with Goss, of Wanganui, the present amateur champion. On the previous day, Black was responsible for the notable feat of winning 4 holes straight, when he had to bag them all to win. This time he was 6 down in the morning and 7 down at the first afternoon hole and although he worked Goss down to dormy 4,3, and 2, he was unequal to completing his task and lost 3 down and Ito play. The first three holes were halved in 5, 4 and 5 and Goss opened his score account at the fourth winning it in 4 to 5. The fifth was halved in 4 and Black squared the game with a good 3at the next. Goss went away again with 3 at the seventh and eighth and winning the minth in 5 to 6, turned for home 3 up. Halving the tenth in 3 Goss took the eleventh and twelfth in 4’s but Black won the next in 3to 4. Another 4 gave Goss the fourteenth and he was 5 up again. The next three were halved in 4, 5 and 5, Black missing a 4 feet putt for a win at the seventeenth. Goss won the last hole in 4 and was then 6 up on the morning’s play. Going out in the afternoon, Goss won the first hole in 4 and the next two were halved in 5. Black won the fourth in 4 and the next four holes were halved in par golf. At the ninth Goss took three putts and did the same at the tenth and eleventh, Black taking advantage of each mistake and reducing the lead to 3 up. At the next hole Black pushed his second into the wind and was in rough while Goss found the green, winning the hole in 4 to 5, making him 4up again. Black holed a very difficult putt on the thirteenth for a win in 3 but at the next missed a 2 feet putt for a half. Goss then leaving dormy for Black, won the fifteenth with a nice 4, to 5 and sixteenth by holing a ten feet putt for 4, leaving Goss dormy two. At the next hole, however, Black topped his second. Goss put his nicely on the green from the rough winning the hole in 4 to 5 and the match 3 up and 1 to play. The only feature of note in the morning round of the match between J. Harold (Wanganui) and L. Quinn (Eltham) was the fact that they halved every hole going out, except the fourth which was taken by Harold. Both were in difficulties at the 9th, 558 yards, and halved it in seven. Then the short tenth and -eleventh were secured by Harold in 3 and 4 to Quinn’s 4 and 6. Quinn took the next while the thirteenth and fourteenth w’ere halved in 4’s. From this on, to use the jargon of the tourney, Harold “crashed” and lost 4 holes in succession. The round finished with Quinn 2 up. Their afternoon round was almost a repetition of the first in rhe matter of honours and character of play. Quinn was prominent with excellent wooden and iron shots, while Harold was badly off his game. The Eltham player had a comfortable win 5 up and 4 to play. A large gallery followed the play of Wright and Gunson, in which there was much local interest. Gunson was the better golfer on the day, Wright failing to reach the standard of the previous day, twice picking up as a result of duffed drives. The other match between Lusk and Conway was interesting in the morning when Lusk was 1 down but he played almost faultlessly in the afternoon and won handsomely. LADJES’ OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP.
