MARRIED A RAJAH
AUSTRALIAN GIRL’S CLAIMS AN INDIAN ROMANCE. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Sun Cable.) DELHI, September 9. (Received September 10, 11.0 p.m.) An action for maintenance, brought by the Maharanee of Tikari against her husband, Rajah Tikari, a young Indian nobleman, of Bengal, w*as dismissed. Plaintiff is an Australian girl, Elsie Sitwell, whose stage name is Elsie Forest. She visited India in 1904 in company with her husband as members of a theatrical company. Later the couple were divorced and Elsie returned to India, adopted Hindooism and married Tikari. The case hinged on a claim for an annuity under a deed of gift alleged to have been made by Tikari. The Judge, in dismissing the claim, declared the marriage with Tikari ilegal because plaintiff’s conversion to Hindooism was not according to Hindoo lawj also because the divorce obtained from her former husband was fraudulent and without the jurisditcion of the Court. The Rajah is now claiming the recovery of the Tikari family jewels from plaintiff. As the Maharanee of Tikari Elsie in 1913 paid a visit to Australia, where, dressed in Oriental splendour and entertaining lavishly, she created considerable sensation.
