STANDARD OF WAGES

AN ALTERATION SOUGHT. INCOME TAX EXEMPTIONS. The adoption of what is described as a more equitable standard of wages is proposed in a remit which the Auckland Chamber of Commerce is submitting to the Dominion Conference of the Chambers of Commerce. The remit is as follows:—“Whereas the statutory minimum wage is based upon the assumed requirements of a married man with two children or equivalent dependants, while the responsibilities of threefourths of wage-earners are admittedly less than those which the scale is designed to meet, Parliament be urged to insist upon the adoption of a more equitable standard.” A further remit is as follows:—“That with a view in the meantime, to modifying in some measure the disparity in the position of those with responsibilities and those without, under present conditions, Parliament be urged to consider the advisability of reducing the present income tax exemption from £3OO to £2OO, subject to a further exemption of £5O for each married man, widower or widow with children, and £25 for each child cr other statutory dependant.”
