FORESTRY CONFERENCE
Fathering at Sydney. SOFT WOODS IN SHORT SUPPLY. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) SYDNEY, September 9. The Australian and New Zealand Forestry Conference has opened, New Zealand being represented by Mr E. Phillips-Turner, secretary of the New Zealand Forestry Service. In his opening address, the Hon. W. E. Wearne, Minister of Lands and Forests, referred to the threatened shortage of soft woods and the State Government scheme to plant 2000 acres yearly with a view to providing for future supply. He detailed the Government entomologist’s good work in investigating remedies against the menace of and the enormous damage caused by timber borers. The President’s addess stressed the urgent need to provide a local supply of soft woods, of which Australia last year imported £3,000,000 worth. The delegates will resume the conference after inspection of the State forests and nurseries.
