THE ADELAIDE MURDER

MOTIVE FOR CRIME REMAINS A MYSTERY. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) ADELAIDE, September 9. The motive which caused Barrowcliff to murder his wife, later committing suicide, is a mystery. The couple appeared to have been extremely happy, and neighbours were surprised to hear Barrowcliff speaking sharply to his wife on Saturday. The tragedy was enacted on Sunday morning, and was not discovered till early on Monday, when a neighbour entered the house and found Mrs Barrowcliff with her head battered in and Barrowcliff still alive lying beside the body and bleeding from a deep cut in the throat. Barrowcliff said that he hit his wife on the head once and she never moved again. The couple had just sold the house in which they lived for £lOOO. It is stated that Barrowcliff was a prominent figure in the Glenrowan district in the Kelly gang days.
