WYNDHAM LEAGUE
MONTHLY MEETING, The usual monthly meeting was held in the Board Room on Monday evening. Those present were: C. E. Davey (President), J. Miller. T. Strang H. F. Hicks, D. N. Raymond, W. 0. C. McKay and E. Sherborne (secretary,'. The Chairman stated that trees had been planted under the guidance of Messrs Lennie and Sons. The trees planted were 17 silver birches, 9 mountain ashes, and 2 other silver birches kindly given them by Airs T. Finlayson. The Town Board had loaned a man, and they had employed one themselves, and the work had now been completed except for the wire netting round the trees.
Mr Davey said that he had attended the quarterly meeting of the Southland League on Thursday of the previous week. He t-aid the thing that was of most interest to the Welfare League was the need for closer settlement by taking up Education endowment leases, and private leases if necessary, thereby causing greater production. Mr Marsh stated that he had mentioned this matter, and thought it would have some effect in securing a better railway system. Mr Raymond moved that the President and mover look into the matter of Education endowment lands in the lower Tuturau, Wyndham, and Mokoreta survey district, and portions of upper Toi Tois district, and that they apply to the Commissioner of Crown Lands and Otago Boys’ and Girls’ High School Board for information about tenures and rentals, and areas of endowment lands. Mr Marsh seconded, and the motion was carried. The Chairman brought up the matter of the military training camp to be held at Wyndham in February, when some 1200 young men would assemble there for training, and he said that he thought something should be done in the way of entertaining them. After a long discussion, the matter was passed over.
Mr Raymond put forward the following motion, which was seconded by Mr Miller and carried: “That the President and secretary go into the matter of the treatment meted out to those settlers in the district who made applications to the State Advances Department in September, 1923 and onward to January, 1924, and’ whose’ applications are still unsettled—neither granted nor declined—and that a letter be sent promptly to the bon. Minister of Finance, accurately setting out the general circumstances, and emphasising the urgency of having the applications from this district which are so far in arrear taken in hand at the earliest possible date.” Mr Raymond also brought up the matter of wandering stock, and it was decided to ask the Town Board to look into this matter, and that the inspector was not doing his duty in that respect.
