FIRE AT CLIFTON
PUBLIC HALL BURNT DOWN. The Clifton Public Hall was destroyed by fire last night. The building, which is a very old one, is close to the premises of Mr F. Lange, and the hall was discovered to be on fire by Mrs Lange at about a quarter past eleven. The building, which was of wood, burnt like tinder, the flames being aided by a fairly strong breeze, and it was a hopeless job to try and put the fire out. A number of residents, who had come to the scene of the outbreak, gave their attention to preventing the fire from spreading, Mr Lange’s bakehouse being only about a dozen yards away, but fortunately the wind was blowing in the other direction. The Hall was completely destroyed.
