GRASS FIRES

A LENGTHY COURT CASE. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 20. After a hearing extending over seven days, the case in which Robert Keir McCandless, a farmer of Parnassus, claimed £1913 10s and Alister Malcolm MacFarlane claimed £4OOO from Norman Rutherford, of Mendip Hills for damage alleged to have been done by a grass fire which spread to plaintiff’s property was concluded in the Supreme Court to-day, the Jury finding for plaintiffs by a three-fourths majority for lesser amounts than those claimed. Mr Justice Adams was on the Bench, and there was a Common Jury of twelve. MacFarlane was awarded £5OO damages and McCaudless £526. An application by counsel for defendant to move for a non-suit and a new trial on the ground that the verdict was against the weight of evidence -was granted.
