MILLIONAIRE’S SON
A PERJURY CHARGE. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) LONDON, June 18. Sir Derrick Wernher, a son of Lady Ludlow, was arrested and charged with perjury, which he is alleged to have committed during bankruptcy proceedings on May 6, 1912. Wernher declares that he knows nothing of the charge. The accused was declared bankrupt in 1912. His father was a famous South African magnate, who left him £l2OO a year while he was between the ages of twenty-five and thirty, and £24-00 a year thereafter. The sum of £150,000 was placed in trust for his children. The accused’s younger brothers were bequeathed £1,000,000 and £1,500,000 respectively. Sir Julius Wernher died in 1912, leaving £11,000,000, the greater part of which went to his widow (now Lady Ludlow), who isreputed to be the richest woman in England. During the war she subscribed £2,000,000 to war loans. Lord Ludlow was killed at Huntingford in 1922. Sir Julius Wernher’s name came into prominence last weak, when burglars rifled the farmous Wernher jewel collection.
