Mrs J. Brokenshire, who has been in Australia for some months returned by the Moeraki from Melbourne last night. Messrs H. Geddes and T. O’Byrne, who have been spending a holiday in Australia arrived back in Invercargill last mght.

A Sydney cablegram states that Mr Austin Chapman, Minister of Trades and Cus toms, has resigned on account of ill-health. A cablegram from Rome states that the Italian King and Queen, Crown Prince and Princess Mafalda, have left Rome by train for London.

Mr W. Cook, who has been promoted to the position of examiner at Invercargill in succession to Mr G. Adamson, took up his new duties in the Money Order and Savings Bank Department on Saturday. Councillor H. J. Farrant, Chairman of the Reserves Committee of the Town Council, is proceeding to Wellington to-day t< discuss afforestation matters with the Minister. Mr R. A. Wilson, who has been appointed to the Christchurch office of the New Zealand Insurance Coy., leaves Invercargill by the express this morning to assume his new position. Mr R. McGiffivray, Instructor in Agriculture for Southland, left by the afternoon express yesterday for Dunedin to take part in the Otago Winter School. Mr McGillivray expects to be absent until about June 6. Mr J. Alexander, at present on the staff of the Bank of New Zealand. Riverton, has received notice of transfer to the Dunedin office. He will be succeeded at Riverton by Mr Walsh, of the Invercargill office. Mr T. J. Quayle, formerly of the Christchurch Postal staff, who has been appointed to take charge of the Stamps, Registration and Delivery branch of the Chief Post Office, Invercargill, took up his new duties yesterday. Lieutenant-Colonel N. E. Avery, GJLG., DJS.O., N.Z.S.C., who is making a brief tour of inspection, will arrive in Invercargill to-day He will be accompanied by Major S. C. P. Nicholls, D. 5.0., N-ZJS.C. Councilor F. Holloway was appointed by the South Invercargill Borough Council at its meeting last evening as the Borough’s representative on the Executive of the Southland League, and Councillors Hewitt and Brown were appointed to attend the quarterly' meetings of that body 7. Cotmeiflior A. Glass, Chairman of the Tramways Committee of the Town Council, leaves by the express this morning on his way to Wellington to attend a Dominion Conference regarding Tramway Regulations. Mr B. J. Glancefield (Traffic Manager) will accompany Councillor Glass, while the local employees will be represented by Mr N. Jones, President of the Invercargill Tramway Employees’ Union.
