THE PREFERENCE ISSUE
GOVERNMENTS ATTITUDE CRITICISED EFFECT ON OVERSEAS SETTLEMENT. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright). (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, May 7. (Received May 7, 8 pan.) The Empire Producers’ Organisation passed a resolution that it views with apprehension the failure of the Government to ratify the resolutions of the Economic Conference and regards with dismay the proposals of the Government to reduce the duties on certain products receiving Preference with stabilising preferences at the pre-Budget money value, thereby checking enterprise in the development of the Empire.
The Organisation points out that the action of the Government will force the dominions in their search for markets to enter into long-term commercial treaties with foreign countries regardless of Britain’s interests, w’hich action the dominions has long striven to avoid in an endeavour to institute a common Empire economic policy. The resolution also emphasises that the action of the Government will make more iifficult the task of finding settlement opportunities for Britain’s surplus population.
