TOWN COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. Th® fortnightly meeting of the Town Council took place last evening when there were present:—The Mayor (Mr A. Bain) and Councillors A. J. Geddes, W. H. Boyes, C. J. Brodrick, C. J. Broad, H. J. Farrant, Alex Glass, John Miller, Hugh Ritchie, S. Morell Macaltater, R. P. Meek, L. Webb and E. Sheehan. CORRESPONDENCE. The secretary of the State Forestry Department advised that a conference to deal with the proposed revision and standardisation of specifications, regulations and bylaws in regard to the uses of timber had been definitely set down for May 6 at Wellington. The Works Committee was deputed to act in the matter. The secretary of the Southland Hospital Board wrote stating that the Borough’s apportionment of the Board’s levy amounting to £23,369 on the contributory local authorities for the year ending March 31, 1925, would be £4139. Referred to Finance Committee. John Pearaon applied for a license for a shooting gallery in Esk street. —The application having been recommended by the Police was granted. The Director of the Southland Technical College applied for the annual subsidy usually granted by the Council to be again contributed this year.—Referred to Finance Committee. REPORTS OF COMMITTEES. The reports of the various committees were adopted without amendment. The report submitted by the Public Library Committee was as follows:—(1) Having authorised a requisition for the purchase of 180 volumes of miscellaneous literature to cost about £95; (2) Having authorised the Lending Department and the Juvenile Library to be closed on Easter Saturday; (3) With reference to the matter of Carnival Week decorations, recommend the matter of the illumination of the Public Library be left in the hands of the Chairman and Librarian with power to act, provided the cost does not exceed £l5; (4) Having the matter of erecting a new Public Library building under consideration; (5) Having received with thanks, donations of books from Messrs C. S. Longuet, W. S. Elliott, C. B. Rout and an anonymous donor, 24 books in all. The report was adopted.
