COUNTY COUNCIL

SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting of the Southland County Council yesterday was attended by the Chairman (Mr E. Bowmar), Councillors R. Baird, W. Norman, T. Fraser, F. Trapski, L. A. Neiderer, G. Wraytt and T. Golden. A letter was received from the District Railway Engineer, stating that the Council’s private siding right at Greenhills would expire on June 30, and asking whether the Council would require the right to be renewed. —Renewal to be applied for. A letter from the Town Clerk stated that the information given by the County was not sufficient to enable the Council to check the County Council’s account of £lOO for the dismantling of the old Otatara bridge. He had been instructed to offer the county £75 in full settlement. —Inspector to report. Janies Looney, Grove Bush, wrote requesting the Council to take the necessary steps to have the outfall draifi through Mr E. McKay’s property cleaned out.—lnspector to report. W. Hocking, Hedgehope, applied to the Council for half cost of cleaning out Sprigg’s ditch.—lnspector to report as to the value of the work done. The County Engineer reported in connection with the application of J. C. Green for a road giving him access to his property at Tisbury. The Engineer reported that he could not recommend that the work asked for be carried out with county money, nor could he recommend that a Government grant be applied for, in view of the fact that the Council was applying for a vote for Wixon road, for work leading to the northern end of applicant’s land. —The report was adopted, a copy of the report to be sent to the applicant. James Munro, Lochiel, wrote stating that a drain in connection with which he had just paid the Council £35 in settlement of a dispute between the writer and the Council, was blocked with silt and earth from the County’s recent road contract. In wet weather the water would back on to his land and he therefore requested the Council to have it cleaned out.—The Council has no liability in the matter. A letter was received from Watts & Grieve in regard to a motor accident which occurred on the Chatton road on the night of April 10. One of the firm’s cars was being driven along the road when it dropped into an open ditch. There was no apparent damage done to the car, but on trying to turn a corner the steering gear would not act. The car ran off the road .and turned a complete somersault. The cost of repairing the car was estimated at £4O, and the Council was requested to consider assisting towards the cost of repairs.— Council recognises no liability. G. Braid and H. J. Hands, Fortification, applied to have formation work on Braid’s road continued for a distance of 25 chains, and also to have culverts metalled. —Referred to member for the riding and engineer. Smith and Dolamore, solicitors, Gore, applied for a licence for a water-race, the line of the race to cross certain roads in the Tuturau district and running for some considerable distance along the main Ma-taura-Ferndale-Clinton road.—Council has no objection provided the pipe-line Is laid and maintained to the satisfaction of the engineer. W. Pettigrew, Limehills, wrote stating that it was close on two years now since the Council held over his application in regard to his road until the Spring. The Council did not say which Spring. The road was unfit for heavy traffic.—Matter will receive attention next Spring. A letter was received from the Public Works Department, stating that a deputation had recently waited upon the Minister of Public Works in reference to the state of the final six miles of the Mokoreta main road. It was indicated that the road was of sufficient importance to warrant consideration of a proposal to improve it, and there was a possibility that the Minister would consider such a proposal.—Matter is under consideration. A letter was received from the New Zealand Milk Products, Ltd., stating that its farm inspector while proceeding to a farm at Branxholme ran into an open ditch cut straight across the road. Damage to the extent of £1 16/3 was caused, for which claim was made against the Council.—Engineer to inspect and report.
