WAR REVELATIONS

OIL RETURNED TO THE EARTH.

A SARAWAK INCIDENT.

(By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright). (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.)

LONDON, March 5. (Received March 5, 10 p.m,) Hon. T. G. Cochrane, lecturing before the Royal Society of Arts, revealed the fact that during the war 30,000 tons of oil at Sarawak, for which there was neither transport nor storage, were, on Lord Bearated’s advice, returned to the earth. Afterwards 14,000 tons were recovered. Lord Bearsted, following the lecturer, said as there were 30,000 tons of petrol worth £450,000 it required some courage to adopt the untried plan, but he was glad when he thought of what had occurred because those dealing with the eruptive wells which swamped the country now knew they could put the surplus back into exhausted wells and probably later recover a proportion. He proceeded to emphasise that the development of Sarawak would have an important bearing on Singapore because it was inconceivable Britain would ever allow that wonderful field to fall into an enemy’s hands.
