SOUTHLAND COMMITTEE. The wontbly meeting of Main Committee was helH at the Association rooms on Friday when there were present:— Messrs J. Gilkison (chairman), D. Cuthbertson, H. W. Royds (Invercargill', A. McKenzie (Otahuti), J. Fisher (Otautau), F. W. Brown (Mataura), H. E. Niven (Edendaie), K. G. McKenzie (Fortrose), J. S. A. McDougall (Bluff', T. McCarroll (Lumsden), and Dr Trotter (Riverton). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs E. R. Bowler and 0. Bennet. Financial Statement.—The monthly financial statement to date showed: Investments, £45,270 advances outstanding, £4009 2/1; in trust from Defence Office, £330 14/9; receipts for period since 18th January—refunds, £234 2/6; interest, £l3 15/-; total, £247 17/6. Expenditure for the same period had been as follows: Relief grants, £248 15/4; advances, £2ll i 5/-; stationery, etc., £l9 8/1; administra tion, etc., £46 10/10;—total, £525 19/3 The excess of expenditure over receipts was thus £278 1/9. The position of current account showed a debit of £490 18/1. The statement was received. Correspondence.—Several letters of acknowledgement were received, also a letter from the N.Z. Sheepowners’ Fund, notifying that no further assistance could be granted from the fund to class “A” men. Temporary Advances.—The Emergency Committee submitted draft of a letter which it was proposed to send to debtors who were not standing to their obligations. The letter was approved. 1 Ryal Bush Case—The case of the widow and family at Ryal Bush was again fully discussed, as the result of a letter from the Canterbury fund declining to grant further assistance in the meantime. Several aspects of the case were considered in committee, and it was eventually decided to authorise the President, Chairman and Secretary to act as a deputation to the Editor of the Southland Times to afford him an interview. Emergency Committee.—The report of the Emergency Committee was then considered, and several cases disposed of, after which new applications were considered and dealt with. Thirty-three cases were under review; of this number, four were declined, thirteen held over for enquiries, and sixteen were granted assistance totalling £199 7/3, being loans, £l5O, and grants £49 7/3. Next Meeting.—The date of next monthly meeting was fixed for Friday, March 21.
