SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED. Cbfden Racing Club's Annual meeting on Wednesday. Poverty Bay Turf Club’s meeting returned increased betting figures. Otahubu Trotting Club’s Summer fixture concludes on Wednesday next. Ex-Invercargill gelding Rigel won a race at Riccarton on Saturday, afternoon. Wanganui Jockey Club’s Autumn meeting opens on Thursday and concludes on Saturday. Ex-Riverton mentor, J. Thistleton, had Sartolite running unsuccessfully at Riccarton on Saturday. Lunelight has been spelling since her return from Dunedin, but the Riccarton mare is ail right. Jumpers’ flat contests have been substituted for hurdle races at the Oamaru J.C. S Autumn meeting next month. The success of Mantua in the Midsummer Handicap on Saturday marks her first win over one mile and a half. Riccarton trainer S. Trilford, with two winners at the C.J.C. meeting on Saturday, now heads the list of winning mentors in Maoriland. Royal Star has been causing his trainer anxiety owing to leg troubles, hence his failure to face the music at Riccarton on Saturday. The Wellington-owned mare Stream has been very unlucky this season, with one win and thirteen placings against her name. The imported English filly, Maria of Hereford, has been in a very bad way since she fell in a race at the recent Egmont fixture and fears are entertained for her. When the last mail to hand left Auckland it was freely anticipated that Delavan Quest would start favourite for the Otahuhu Trotting Cup on Saturday. During the present season Tinokaha has won three country cups in Auckland—Te Kuiti Cup, Te Awamutu Cup and Taumaninui Cup—all valuable events. The three-year-old filly Startle, by Flying Sian, has had the unusual experience of dead-heating for first place in two races during the past week. At the Gisborne meeting she divided the Awapuni Handicap with Soleil d’Or, while at the Poverty Bay meeting on Thursday last she ran a dead heat with Polonett in the Summer Stakes. Dwellers on the West Coast of the North Island had an opportunity of seeing the Southland mare, Glentruin, in action on Saturday and it is satisfactory to learn that she was galloping in winning vein. Her mission was the Tenth Taranaki Stakes, £5OO, second £6O, third £4O (six furlongs’, and carrying 9.7 she defeated Rational (9.3) easily by a length and a half, with Lady Bentiack (6.11) and Gaillard unplaced. The English mare ran home in Imin ISsecs. After a spell of seven weeks (says the Press/, the Southland pacer, Logan Chief, winner of the Free-for-All, has been taken in hand again by J. J. Kenneriey, and is doing light exercise prior to being put into strong It is reported that Cold Steel returned a substantial drridend when he accounted for the Taranaki Jubilee Cup last week. He ran particularly well in the Wellington Cup, when he acted the role of pacemaker until the finishing stage was reached, but backers probably overlooked this guiding fact. The new grandstand at Trentham will not be completed in time for the Wellington R.C.S Autumn meeting, but a temporary roof will be in position as cover for the public. There was one incident in connection with the racing at Te Kuiti recently that caused no little excitement, that being the surprise victory of Criss Abbey in the Otorohanga Handicap. The Quin Abbey gelding was the rank outsider in a field of twelve, having only 23 tickets on him, and he paid one of the biggest dividends that has been returned in the Auckland district for some time. Two green two-year-oids were started in the Lyttelton Plaxe at Riccarton on Saturday in the colours of Mr G. D. Greenwood, the youngsters referred to, who were unplaced, were Ophir and Connthic. The former is a gelding by Solferino—Adour, and Connthic a filly by Solferino—Greenstreet. Very few of the progeny of the English horse have raced well as two-year-olds, but their improvement has been known to extend over a number of years with seasoning and racing, Mantua and Roseday being instances in support of this theory. Mr W. Scholium, owner of Ruapapa and Royal Blood aeroplaned from Gisborne to Napier, en route to New Plymouth, to see bis horses run at the Taranaki J.C.’s Jubilee fixture.

light harness horse-breeders in the Eastern District, and Messrs Stevenson and McMath, in particular, will be interested to note that the winners of the first two races on the card at the Otahuhu Trotting Club s meeting on Saturday were descendants of Waverley, viz., Jewel Wave and Ekoeranei. In this connection it is to be noted that the former is a trotter and the latter a pacer, not a surprising fact when it is realised that Waver! eys sire, Galindo, was responsible for some very smart trotters and came of a great trotting strain himself. Waverley, who was at the stud for some years in the Auckland province, where he also raced with success, is now lord of the harem at Mr J. Stevenson’s Willowbank Stud, where some of the best mares in the land are located Waverley, who was a smart pacer, wa* bred by Mr W. Kerr, of Wildwood Farm, Christchurch, by Galindo— Thelma (dam of Willowwood Wildwood Junr., Marie Corelli, Authoress, Adonis, Lady Sybil, Cameos, Aristos, Neil Denis, The Pointer and Azekion), by Kentucky—Pride nf Lincoln. Considering the great family from which he sprang on the dam’s side of the house and the success of his sire Galindo, it is not to be wondered at that Waverley should be credited with winners of good races. The success of his halfbrother, Adonis, as a sire in Southland probably influenced the Wenden studmasters in securing Waverley, but he reads like a first-ciass stallion quite apart from his relationship to sturdy little Adonis.

Marconigram. by Markhope—Bon Maid, looked well when stripped at Tapanui, but failed to run up to expectations. When examined at close quarters, he is rather a taking horse, just the stamp to cause very little surprise if he should develop into a useful stake winner, but, so far, he has been a disappointment. A good track worker and generous feeder under all circumstances, he appears to become too highly strung on race days and this fact invariably acts against him in his racing. However, travelling and racing may have a sobering effect on him and in the meantime he is being called upon to compete again this week at Oifden R.C. fixture. When the writer interviewed him half an hour after his race at Tapanui he was still “on his toes” as they aptly describe a horse made anxious by coming into competition with his equine rivals—quite a number of the progeny of Markhope have been troubled in this manner until they became seasoned.

At the monthly meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club committee last week it was unanimously resolved that the previous resolution charging for ladies’ tickets be rescinded, and the question of the control of such tickets be deferred till next meet

There was a shrinkage in the totalisator turnover at the Dunedin Cup meeting (writes “Sentinel” in Otago Witness), but a deep cut in the stakes attached to last year’s programme will help to build up the possible profit over the meeting. The cut materially helped to make the profit over the recent Summer meeting. The three-year-old filly Finora, who ran second to Red Wink in the Craven Plate at Riccarton on Saturday, is a full sister to the speedy Will Oakland. She is a very fast juvenile when engaged in track gallops, but does not always do her best when stripped in public. It is quite likely, however, that she will settle down to business with advancing years, as this was the experience with Will Oakland, a generous gelding when he finally came to profit. The Tapanui pacing winner. Hecton, has been penalised for the light harness events at the Clifden Racing Club’s meeting on Wednesday, but he is a useful mover and it looks as if he will be again in the money this week at the pretty riverside track. On Friday, February 26, entries are due for the Oamaru Jockey Club’s Autumn meeting on March 22 and 24. The programme consists of seven races per day, with stakes ranging from £ll5 to £250 in value, and it is hoped that the fixture will result in a satisfactory manner, as the North Otago turf institution has not been blessed with the best of luck of recent years. Writing in the Otago Witness “Sentinel” remarks: —“When a horse drops from a winning position to one near the tail of a field, when the change is sure to materially effect the result of a race some official investigation should be made into the matter. Roseday was always well placed and travelling well over the first mile in the Dunedin Cup. .Going up the rise, he went back to nearly last and then came on again to finish third. The cause of his doing so should have been officially investigated. Some said he was ridden in exactly the same manner in the New Zealand Cup, but the loss of ground was due to two totally different reasons. Roseday was galloped on in the Dunedin Cup, and some effort should have been made to find out who was the cause of the riding and crowding which might have ruined the best handicap horse in New Zealand. Some inquiry might have been made into the matter, but the fact remains that it did not become public. It is a fact that Roseday could not be produced, on the second day of the meeting, and so we were deprived of a chance, of seeing him lend interest to the Hazlett Memorial Plate. CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB. A PLEASANT SUMMER FIXTURE. CHAMPION GLOAMING WINS EASILY. GALLANT LITTLE MANTUA SUCCESSFULL. (Special to the Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, February 16. The weather was fine for the Canterbury J.C.’s Summer fixture and the attendance was good, with a sprinkling of visitors in evidence form the other Island and a few well known regulars hailing from South Canterbury and Otago. The track was fast but to the minds of anxious owners and trainers it presented an over-firm surface. The racing was interesting and the promised appearance of Gloaming attracted a number of onlookers. It was thought that the DJ.C. Hazlett Memorial Plate winner, Murihaupo. might extend Mr Greenwood’s representative, but champion Gloaming was not extended in accounting for the classical Middle Park plate. The principal handicap event went to Dunedin, Mr Hill scoring with gallant little Mantua, who, despite her somewhat mean appearance, has proved herself one of the most consistent gallopers preparing in New Zealand over the past three seasons. The time for the Middle Park Plate (Imin 11 3-ssecs> was the second fastest on record, the best figures (Imin llsecs) being credited to Murihaupo last season. His victory of this afternoon was the first ever gained by Gloaming in the CJ.C.’s Summer meeting classic race. AN AUSTRALIAN WINS CUP RACE. KEEN AND INTERESTING COMPETITION. (Special to the Times). AUCKLAND, February 16. There was a very large attendance when the Otahuhu Trotting Club’s Summer meeting opened to-day under very successful conditions. The weather was all that could be desired and the racing track was in excellent order, while the racing was keen and very interesting, close finishes being the order of the afternoon. The principal event, Otahuhu Cup Handicap, which atracted a field including representatives of both North and South Islands and the Commonwealth, was won by a stranger from overseas, victory resting with an invador from New South Wales, viz., Delavan Quest, who is owned by one of the best-known light harness followers in that part of the world, Mr A. R. Tewksbury. The bay stallion, who is trained here by the Sydney reinsman, P. Riddle, has been very successful since he landed in Auckland, having stepped fast to score in three good races. The totalisator investments amounted to £50,652 10/-, as compared with £46,609 on the corresponding day of last season —an increase of £3983 10/-. Results:— TRIAL HANDICAP (saddle), £250.
