THE MIDDLE SCHOOL.
To the Editor. Sir, —The report with which I furnished your paper in connection with the last annual break-up ceremony of the Middle School, I regret to say, contained two inaccuracies. In your Saturday’s issue, I notice a paragraph which shows that misconceptions have arisen in regard to the reference the headmaster made to the results of the “Dalton System” in St. 6. Mr Featherstone actually stated that, considering the difficulties encountered in initiating the Dalton Plan, the results of 1923 compared favourably with those of previous years. The published report implied that the results were equally good numerically. The second correction has reference to the inspector’s report on general effidency and discipline. My report used the term “excellent,” whereas Mr Featherstone stated “the school maintains, in connection with general efficiency and discipline its grade of “Very Good.” Considering the amount of comment these errors have caused. I voluntarily correct them in the hope that existing misconceptions will thereby be corrected. Had time permitted, and the report been submitted to the headmaster, these unfortunate mistake® would have been corrected before the® went into print. —I am. etc., lAN G. MACLENNAN. (Mr Wyllie, Senior Inspector, to whom the above was submitted, agrees that it forms a satisfactory answer to Mr Wyllie’a statement in the Southland Times of Saturday last, and frees Mr Featherstone, * teacher of proved skill and integrity, from any suspicion of having claimed for school results in any way beyond his du«v —Ed. S.T.)
